Do we think of God as being fun, or more as a kill joy, and always deadly serous, stern, and somber?
Our image of God, or as AW Tozer said, What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.
If this is true, I wonder how many of us simply don’t enjoy God, because of how we think about Him. The Westminster Catechism even says the chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.
To be honest, I’m learning this truth – that God is actually fun. He’s kind. He’s joyful. He’s playful. He’s loving. He’s adventurous, and He invites us to come along. He is holy, righteous, providential, omnipotent, and all these other things too, but yes, God is also fun.
Just look at His creation – even animals play, and nature calls to us to come alongside to play in its waves, hike its hills, fish its streams, and explore its woods.
Yes – God invites us to play and to have fun with Him. Even our desires of the heart come from Him – so why would He not welcome us to join Him in pursuing those desires?
I am doing this now – I have accepted the invitation and have gone away with God to pursue some of the interests He has given me. I am nervous, a bit timid, uncertain, and at times lonely, but I am also learning more about my heavenly Father’s heart and His deep love for me.
I know this may sound strange to some – to go play and have fun with God. Admittedly, it feels a bit odd to me as I partake on this 10 day journey alone with Him, amidst His creation, but it is also so very good. It is well with my soul, and I am grateful, and overwhelmed to have the privilege and blessing to go have some fun with my Father – learning new skills, pursuing new adventures, and leaning deeper into my faith, and relationship with Christ.
May we all engage, and dare to learn even more the value of such heavenly treasures and pursuits – to enjoy God – which includes getting away and having some fun with Him.
